COVID-19 RESPONSEIn response to the COVID-19 pandemic, DFSS pivoted to ensureour campus infrastructure was safely maintained, appropriatecapital and deferred maintenance projects continued movingforward, and that environmental health and safety was notsacrificed. We were able to do this quickly with essentialemployees working both on campus and remotely. In Facilities Management, our Custodial Services departmenttransitioned from business- as-usual operations to providedetailed cleaning of all high-touch areas including entrances, elevators, stairwells, hallways and corridors, restrooms, conference rooms and even outside plazas. Without manystudents, staff and faculty on campus, our team was able tocomplete detailed cleaning projects in 48 buildings, including all93 General Assignment classrooms. They scraped buckets of gumfrom underneath desks and tables, as well as vacuumed, swept, mopped, polished and shampooed floors. Thanks to ouroutstanding team, the Campus has never looked better!Even though you may not have been on campus, it does notmean that maintenance issues stayed away. Our team took careof planned and unplanned maintenance needs from brokenwater lines, to HVAC repairs, to downed tree limbs. The teamworked on ensuring air systems met building specifications, installed hand sanitizers, and tested water in preparation for yourreturn. Our Environmental Health and Safety department also workedclosely with campus partners to disseminate the latest healthand safety information. They kept campus informed of up-to-date guidelines issued bythe Santa Barbara County Department of Public Health andCenters for Disease Control and Prevention regarding COVID-19.Environmental Health and Safety distributed over 7,700 facecoverings to staff working on campus. The Environmental Healthand Safety team is working on developing new COVID-19 relatedtraining protocols, including a return-to-campus training videoand a Worksite Specific Safety Plan. Our Design and Construction Services team continued movingforward on all projects, from lab renovations to new construction.Working with contractors remotely or at an appropriate distance, this team was able to keep projects moving forward. Henley Hallwill be ready to open in the fall as planned, and the ClassroomBuilding is meeting all of its timelines. The scaffolding camedown at Cheadle Hall; the building has never looked better. Our Business and Financial Services team worked tirelessly onthe COVID-19 related leave polices to help all of our staff, butespecially those who do not have the option to work remotelyand often had childcare demands.
