We took swift steps to ensure safepractices in performing work to safeguard our campusinvestment, continue our capital projects, and prepare for yourreturn. We assessed and adjusted building ventilation, addedhand sanitizers and signs, prepared COVID-19 response plans andtraining, and maintained our physical assets. DFSS is always hereto oversee and enhance the infrastructure of campus, whetheryou see us or not. Our achievements, planned and unplanned, are due to our tenetsof customer service, telling our story and a valued workforce.We strive to provide excellent customer service throughrelationship building, communication, and technology. Ourcustomer service this year was exemplified through our continuedwork on campus to constantly prepare for your return. We work as one DFSS team to tell our story about our excellentwork to be the pride of UC Santa Barbara. We participate in TownHalls, lead collaboration meetings with campus partners, meetregularly with stakeholders to receive feedback and sharesuccesses, and develop tools to improve our customers%u2019understanding of what we do and how we can help. In DFSS wealso tell our story by what you see, not what you hear. Your wellmaintained grounds, clean buildings, safe campus, and capitalimprovement projects are all about our story.We value our workforce through recognition, training, growthopportunities, and open communications so staff choose to stay inDFSS. The Acknowledging Commitment and Excellence (ACE)program recognizes DFSS staff and partners who makeextraordinary efforts on campus and are recommended by acommittee and awarded through the executive staff team.Thank you for reading about our FY 2021 accomplishments. IT IS WITH GREAT PLEASURE that I share our Design, Facilities andSafety Services (DFSS) Annual Report for FY 2021. This year%u2019s reportspotlights the tremendous efforts and unwavering dedication ofour staff in their work overseeing the physical infrastructure,design and construction, maintenance and safety of this oceanfront campus. And all during a global pandemic! This year%u2019sreport celebrates our campus%u2019 essential workers. As OprahWinfrey said in her 2021 Commencement address to UC SantaBarbara, %u201c %u2026 now that the pandemic is waning and that essentialworkers are no longer front and center, I hope you remember theiressential value ...%u201d We do and hope you do, too.DFSS departments include:Business and Financial Planning. BFP provides financial andhuman resource support to all DFSS units for capital, operatingand maintenance projects totaling over $200 million and 335 FTEpositions. Design and Construction Services. DCS represents the Universityin all aspects of capital development and improvement with thegoal of creating quality, efficient, safe and sustainable facilitiesrespectful of the region%u2019s unique and sensitive environment.Environmental Health and Safety. EHS provides guidance andservices to the campus community to promote the integration ofhealth, safety, and environmental stewardship to all Universityactivities.Facilities Management. FM provides operations andmaintenance services to the core campus. Its focus is on the statesupported, general-funded buildings and infrastructure including4 million gross square feet and over 260 acres of grounds whilemaintaining the energy needs of the campus in a sustainablemanner.In DFSS we aim to work seamlessly to provide needed support toenhance UC Santa Barbara%u2019s education and research mission.Fiscal Year 2021 was a year full of accomplishments, initiatives, andadjustments which you will read about in the ensuing pages.While DFSS shines in accomplishing planned projects, we are alsoproven in responding to unexpected situations.
