WHILE YOU WERE AWAYWhile the broader campus community was adjusting to thechallenges of remote work due to COVID-19, your Design, Facilitiesand Safety Services (DFSS) team remained primarily on campus asthe great majority of our crew are essential service workers. So,while you may have been working away from campus, we wereproudly and safely here every day. While the team was instrumentalwith COVID mitigation strategies %u2013 from ventilation assessments tosignage placement to plan review %u2013 we also made great strides onaccomplishing campus improvements you may have missed whileyou worked elsewhere. As a result of the limited number of students, faculty and staff oncampus, our Custodial unit was able to create work teams tofreshen-up the spaces where we work and learn. We polishedbuilding entrances and hallway floors; deep cleaned restrooms, classrooms, common areas, floors, conference rooms and kitchens;and power washed sidewalks and outdoor building entrances. Wewere able to provide these services at all our major academic, administrative, and research building locations. We enhanced lighting systems at South Hall, North Hall, Kerr Hall,Ellison Hall, Girvetz Hall, the Library, Broida Hall, IV Theater and LotteLehmann concert hall by replacing old fluorescent fixtures withLEDs. This not only improves the quality of lighting, but also savesenergy. We also entered into UCOP%u2019s Wholesale Power Program whichprovides carbon-free electricity to the main campus. This is asignificant step in moving toward the UC system%u2019s Carbon NeutralityInitiative which commits UC to emitting net zero greenhouse gassesfrom buildings and fleet by 2025.The Design and Construction Services (DCS) team took advantage ofthe low campus occupancy to complete construction work moreefficiently and timely on the Interactive Learning Pavilion, alsoknown as the Classroom Building. Such work would normally cause major inconveniences anddisruptions to campus and would have required off hours and specialrouting that often extends or delays the project schedule. We wereable to avoid these challenges and push ahead. Examples include: %u2022 Extensive hauling through campus by numerous dump trucks tomove soil off site after mass excavation for the foundation system%u2022 Three full days of concrete trucks lining UCen Road to pourapproximately 4500 cubic yards of concrete for the 3 padfoundations %u2022 Delivery and erection of a 180-ton, 200' boom crane; delivery anderection of the entire structural steel framing system %u2022 Installation of the stormwater retention system under Lot 3 When you return, we hope you take a walk by this amazingconstruction project to see the progress. In 2017 Venoco Oil, the entity that was operating the Ellwood MarineTerminal (EMT) on the campus property near the Coal Oil PointReserve and the Upper Devereux Slough, filed for bankruptcy. TheUniversity, as the property owner, remains committed to restoringthe site to its original natural open space setting. EnvironmentalHealth & Safety, in coordination with the UCOP and ExxonMobil, initiated the clean-up process in fall 2020. The project wascompleted during the winter of 2021. The initial phase of the projectemptied the oil and water residue from the tanks and degassed thecontainers. The next phase of the project includes the dismantlingand removal of the tanks.Even though you were away from campus, we were able to makegreat progress on a variety of projects and this highlights only a few.As you return to campus, please take a look around and see theteam%u2019s great work and improvements. And even better, if you see aDFSS employee thank them for helping to keep campus operatingduring this very difficult time. We look forward to seeing you!
