DECARBONIZATION PROJECTIn 2022, UC Santa Barbara%u2019s total greenhouse gas emissions were 67% below 1990 levels despite increasedenrollment and physical growth. Emissions reductions over this time period are primarily attributed toinvestments in energy efficiency work as well as to making the switch to carbon-free power in 2019. Today, 93% of campus operational greenhouse gas emissions are a result of combustion of natural gas forheating and cooking. Most UCs are facing a similar challenge of reducing emissions from on-site fossil fueluse in support of the University%u2019s carbon neutrality commitment. To help our UCs meet this challenge, each campus and medical center has received funding fordecarbonization planning efforts, including detailed infrastructure assessments, cost estimating, andscenario analysis. UC Santa Barbara has been allocated $1 million to commence this planning effort. In April, Chancellor Yang convened the Decarbonization Study Project Committee to help our campus withthese efforts. The committee will work over the coming year to produce the first ever UCSB Clean EnergyMaster Plan.
